Men’s fashion blogger Marcus Jaye, AKA TheChicGeek shares the menswear pieces you need in your wardrobe for SS17 and beyond…
The thing about a ‘classic’ menswear item is it needs a slight update and readjustment every so often. Nothing radical, just knowing when to change the lapel on a jacket or the shape of a trouser to make it contemporary and keep you looking your best. But, gentlemen, not to panic, it’s always an evolution rather than a revolution and you can slowly replace these items in your wardrobe as you update and buy new things, as and when.
The Plain Sweatshirt
There isn’t an easier way to add a layer than put a sweatshirt on. Inspired by traditional sportswear, it’s a youthful addition to any man’s wardrobe. Team under a bomber or go double sports and layer under a tracksuit top. Ideal for those cooler British summer nights or a spring transitional piece.
Try: Levi’s Original Crew Sweatshirt, £55, Levi’s
The Black Jean
Bin the skinny and breathe a sigh of relief. Look for something dark and slightly tapered like a classic black jean.
Try: Buster 0669F tapered jeans, £110, Diesel, John Lewis
The Chelsea Boot
The streamlined and handsome Chelsea boot keeps things simple and masculine – it’ll be the best thing you’ll purchase all year. Experiment with colour and finishes. Many styles are pre-distressed to give your boots that loved and lived-in look.
Try: Bertie Maple Brown, £100, Dune
The White T-Shirt
Crisp, clean and fresh, use the classic white T-shirt as a base layer. It’s time to go slightly oversized, you can easily roll the sleeves to reveal those guns. Go simple and stick to a crew neck with regular length sleeves and look for an element of stretch for comfort.
Try: Plain slim-fit t-shirt in cotton ‘Tessler 51-WS’, £59, Hugo Boss, John Lewis
The Knitted Polo
Rethink the traditional polo in a flattering knitted finish. Just make sure it is clinging to all the right places.
Try: Polo shirt, £8.99, H&M
