It’s not all about the 20-something Gigi Hadid’s of this world in crop tops and mesh leggings, argues That’s Not My Age style blogger Alyson Walsh. The sports luxe trend has something for everyone. The versatility of sporty silhouettes means that this trend is guaranteed to, er, run and run. From track pants with go-faster stripes to colour block dresses, marl sweatshirts and sneakers, easy-to-wear wardrobe staples are chic and comfortable round the clock – it’s just the way you style them.
Gone are the days of turning up for a fitness class in a paint-splattered tour T-shirt. Having the right kit matters, and today’s well-designed sportswear is as ubiquitous as smashed avocado on toast. Combine form and function by investing in a supportive sports bra and proper running shoes. Showing your style doesn’t necessarily mean showing your midriff – look out for patterned leggings or layer up different coloured sports tanks in breathable fabrics to add interest. Finish off with a lightweight cover-up for warming up and down. And if gym selfies are your thing, all this sports gear looks seriously good on Instagram.

Spotted on numerous fashion editors and designers attending the fashion shows earlier this year, sporty track pants are having a moment. Adding a polo neck or fine knit jumper, along with crossover leather sliders or white trainers, makes the perfect weekend outfit. And don’t discount printed (and even stirrup) leggings, too. After an appearance on the Balenciaga catwalk, they are about to make a big comeback this autumn. Balance the look with an oversized hoodie (now a cult favourite thanks to Vetements head designer Demna Gvasalia) and a silky luxe bomber or utility jacket, plus a mini cross-body bag to reign in the volume. You’re good to ready, steady, go!

Keep it smart rather than slouchy for instant success in the style stakes. Avoid looking like you’ve just come from a pre-work workout (without getting changed) by blending sportswear with softly tailored pieces. Try a pair of luxe side-stripe pants with a shell top and tailored jacket, a pencil skirt with a neat marl sweatshirt, or a black or grey jumpsuit with pointed statement flats. Colour blocking also helps add a chic yet sporty twist – and natural fabrics, such as cotton and wool with a hint of stretch – will help you stay cool and composed all day long. Slip on a pair of cocktail trainers or chandelier earrings to go from boardroom to bar in a jiffy.
Try these: Contrast Tie Waist Cropped Culottes, £29.50, M&S; Fitted jacket, £34.99, H&M; Pointed sling-backs, £38, Next.
